Lomo LC-A - Canon QL17 - Yashica Lynx 5000e - Olympus XA4

yashica lynx The Yashica Lynx 5000e is another Japanese '70s rangefinder. It's a beast of a camera, weighing in at almost 2lbs, but very solid, with lots of nice shiny chrome and a huge glass lens so you get a real feeling of quality.

The lens is a fixed Yashinon 1:1.8 45mm and is capable of some very crisp and clear results. The shutter speeds range from 1/1000 to 1 second plus 'B'. The f/stops range from 1.8 up to 22. Like the Canon, it features 'parallax compensation' and rangefinder focusing.

Although designed for mercury cells, the Lynx seems happy with alkaline batteries if you want to take advantage of the built-in light meter. The meter lets you know whether what you're shooting is going to be under- or over-exposed, and because the shutter speeds and aperture rings are 'coupled' you can then choose the desired combination of depth of field and shutter speed, or manually override it if you so wish.

These seem to be available for pretty cheap on eBay, but the Yashica Electro models are much easier to find. I prefer the Lynx as it allows the photographer to set the desired shutter speed, something the Electro only does automatically.
