The Lomo Kompact Automat (or LC-A for short), is a small Russian-made 35mm camera that has become very cult and popular.
Its unique feature is its automatic exposure control, so it's possible to take shots at night without a flash - the shutter will merely stay open for as long as necessary, be it 2 seconds or 2 minutes. Results can be blurry and arty, but invariably they're interesting. The lens is pretty sharp as well, so it works as a decent point-and-shoot in daylight. You never know what kind of photos you'll get with the Lomo. Using cheap, 100 speed film, color saturation can be incredible, and the camera's unpredictability means it's always a pleasure to shoot with. It has a 1:28 38mm lens, distance scale focusing from 0.8 meters to infinity, and f/stops 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, and 16. Brand new models retail for $150, older ones can be bought direct from Eastern Europe for around $90. Reliability can be a problem though - the Lomo isn't exactly well put together - sticky shutter is a common occurance, which I usually fix by dropping the camera on carpet from about 4 feet. I wish I was joking about this.
